Universal's recent development initiatives present a fascinating case study in intellectual property allocation and strategic park development. The contrast between the expansive, fully immersive Isle of Berk for How to Train Your Dragon at Epic Universe and the more compact, multi-franchise DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios Florida invites scrutiny. While Shrek stands as DreamWorks' highest-grossing animated franchise, with continued film production, the disparate scale of these new additions prompts an examination of Universal's long-term vision for its animated properties.

The newly opened DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios Florida, which replaced the former KidZone, is a testament to efficient revitalization within an existing park footprint. It features notable elements such as Shrek's Swamp Meet, Po's Kung Fu Training Camp, the re-themed Trolls Trollercoaster, and the DreamWorks Imagination Celebration live show (Universal Orlando Resort, 2024b). This development is widely perceived as a cost-effective re-skin and enhancement of an aging area, providing a family-friendly update without requiring the ground-up investment characteristic of Epic Universe's lands. In contrast, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk at Epic Universe represents a substantial, purpose-built, and highly immersive environment, complete with multiple new attractions like Hiccup's Wing Gliders, Dragon Racer's Rally, Fyre Drill, and a dedicated live show (Universal Orlando Resort, 2024a). The difference in scale and investment is palpable.
